Bishop Baraga overlooks Keweenaw Bay

The Baraga Conservation District includes the area known as Baraga County. It is in the western part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and borders Lake Superior. It has 594,406 acres, or about 929 square miles, which consists of 93 percent forested land and 3 percent agricultural land. Baraga County also has about 1,080 lakes, 636 miles of streams and rivers, and 65 miles of Lake Superior shoreline.

The largest cities in Baraga County are L'Anse and Baraga. The county is also home to the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians.

The total annual precipitation is 36.93 inches in Baraga. The growing season for most crops is from April through September. The average annual snowfall is 136.7 inches. The greatest snow depth at any one time was 39 inches.
